RENT and a brush with fame

Went into NYC last night and met Nelson to go to see RENT on Broadway. Oh my god- the show was so incredible. On the one hand while I’m so bummed that it took me this long to get to see it, on the other hand the timing couldn’t have been any better. First of all, Adam Pascal (Roger) and Anthony Rapp (Mark) from the original broadway cast and from the movie version were back in the broadway show. Seeing them live was so awesome, I mean those boys can SING. Rent Unbelievable. The actor who played Angel was great last night (so good that I didn’t miss the actor from the movie/the originator from the original cast), but I definitely prefered the original/film actors for Tom Collins and Maureen. Although the Tom in last night’s show did a great job with I’ll Cover You (reprise).  Now that I have seen both the movie and the show, the whole story makes a lot more sense- it’s a lot more rounded out. I think that the movie and show really compliment eachother in that each tells a part of the story that the other is missing.

Anyway, the other reason the timing couldn’t have been better was because during intermission, I looked over into the aisle and saw a very familiar face, but I couldn’t place it. After going thru the mental list of who she could be and why I knew her, I realized it was Tracie Thoms! She is the actor who played Joanne in the film version of RENT and she was sitting in the theatre watching the show! Once I realized it was her, I watched her during the second act singing along with the cast and dancing around in her seat and cheering like crazy. It was so fun to watch her sing along with such excitement and enjoyment. At the finale, some of the actors winked or waved at her. A few people asked for her autograph during intermission and she seemed very nice about it. I didn’t want to bother her but on the way out I kinda timed it so we would be exiting together and I told her that I thought she was incredible in the movie and that I loved her singing. And that I have my 8yr old twin boys listening to the RENT movie soundtrack in the car all the time. She seemed to like that and was very friendly and gracious- not to mention young, skinny, and so pretty. Traciethoms

So it was a great, great night. We even walked back to Penn and made it just in time for the train home (which was so packed due to the Jimmy Buffet concert at the Garden so we had to stand all the way home on the local train-yuck). As soon as the show was over, Nelson asked what we were going to see next. Maybe Spring Awakenings? Any suggestions?

    beach photoshoots like crazy!

Had one this past Sunday and have THREE more coming up this weekend alone. The one Sunday was a lot of fun – it was my good friend Marianne and her sweet and good-looking family. Marianne and I became good friends in my scrapbook class and have been scrapping and laughing ever since. A lot of laughing with her. She’s definitely one of the good ones. (shoes and cleavers and all, right Mare?)

The big kids were very cooperative, the little one (who is a friend of Timmy’s and the same age- so I was so not surprised) was not really in the mood, but I ended up with a few keepers of her anyway. Guess I caught her in a good moment every now and then! I don’t think her husband was very happy about being there and missing his Sunday football games though. One of my favorites from the day. The rest are in an album on the left side if you are interested.Marianne_146x

Timmy had school today where he stayed for 2hrs this week and we left the building. Came home and scrapped with Sharon. It was waaaay too quiet in the house! I missed him a lot but neither of us cried. And he told me he had a great time.

Big boys resumed drum lessons today and it seemed to go well. Working on Jack being a bit more responsible when it comes to keeping organized and bringing home/back the proper study materials. He is so John like that, while Patrick is so obsessive/compulsive like me.

Off to the city again tonight (well, aren’t I just the city girl? No, not really- just having a good run of shows) to see Rent with Nelson.

    a busy, busy day

Crazy day today. Boys to church in the morning with John, Timmy went on some errands with me. Down to the beach to do the last cleanup of the year since they close down today until next summer (waaaa!). Over to their cousin’s birthday party and then to their house for a birthday dinner. In the meantime, I had a photoshoot down at the beach for my friend Marianne. And one of my all time favorite movies was on today (although no time to watch it) 25th Hour with Edward Norton. Oh, I have SUCH a huge crush on him. Now gotta start preparations for tommorrow- back to school.

Here are a few shots from today at the beach playground. Boys were wearing their new shirts from Aunt Maureen. Just love those bright colors!Misc16september_021rc Misc16september_022rc Misc16september_006rc Misc16september_025rc

    the horse

Horsesoccer2_019rc For their First Communion, Grandpa Ken bought the big boys shares in a racehorse, and here she is! Her name is Wheel Charmer and she is going to be racing at Belmont this fall. We finally got to meet her this weekend over at the stables at Belmont where she is currently living and training. Let me just say that 1. even though Belmont is in the middle of Queens (those of you who know me, know how I LOVE Queens-sarcasm) you would never know it. It’s like a whole nother world back there. There a chickens and roosters cock-a-doodle-dooing and walking around with baby chicks. Crazy. and 2. the horses are so cool. A little scary and intimidating but so cool.

Grandpa had the good forsight to bring some carrots along as a little ‘nice to meet you, here’s a snack’ treat. It worked well. Wheelie wasn’t in her stall when we arrived so we walked around the stable a little, saw the other horses, met her trainer briefly, and checked out the chickens. We even saw a runaway horse gallop by. Then Wheelie came back from her walk and got a little rinse off and went back to her stall. We were informed by her groom (Isobelle) that she is agressive and bites so we were a little wary at first. But the boys were very brave and jumped right into feeding her carrots and petting her face and neck. She didn’t bite and seemed interested or at least tollerant of them. No biting or agressiveness at all. She was sweet and pretty. Very muscular too.

We are looking forward to seeing her in her first race in October (hopefully). The boys want her to win at least one race just so we can go into the winners circle with her. It would be nice. We’ll see. We are all looking forward to visiting her again soon. Horsesoccer2_004rc Horsesoccer2_016rc Horsesoccer2_029mids Horsesoccer2_038sc Horsesoccer2_040sc Horsesoccer2_061rc

    a week without

a blog entry. Sorry, been busy. Tuesday was my birthday. It was also September 11th. And Timmy’s first day of school. (Ok, so it hasn’t really been a week since posting since I did blog about Timmy’s first day, but almost). I hate my birthday. It sucks. Not the getting older part- it’s better than the alternative, but the fact that September 11th is THE SADDEST day ever. And as much as I try to avoid it, I always end up watching some recaps from 2001 and crying my eyes out over the course of the day. I can’t help but watch it. I feel like I need to so I don’t forget. Not a pleasant way to spend your birthday. I used to love my birthday. Center of attention and all that. But now, not at all. Besides, being a mommy, it’s really just another day. Everyone needs to get up, dressed, fed, taken care of. Laundry is still waiting, floors still need vacuming and sweeping. Just another day. Oh well. I did get a very nice bouquet of flowers (pink roses, my favorite) from my sweet husband and he picked out an awesome Coach bag for me all by himself! And, the best part, I LOVE IT. He is doing well. Thanks to all my friends who called or sent b’day cards. I didn’t answer the phone much. It’s hard to explain why you are sad on your birthday. But, there it is and now you know.

Chorusline_copy Wednesday my mom and I went into NYC to see A Chorus Line on Broadway. So much fun! We were originally going to go back in January, but I got the flu (thankfully, not the stomach kind, but I was still  sooooo sick) so there was no way I couldv’e gone. I ended up giving the tickets to a friend of mine who was so kind to me while I was sick- she picked up and dropped off the boys at school almost every day for 2weeks while I was dying. She has two daughters who are very talented singers and go to Broadway often. So at least someone got good use out of them. Anyway, I got an offer for reduced price tickets and amazing seats (row 7 orchestra, center) so we decided (after a bit of convincing on my part) to go on the first night of Rosh Hashana. Mainly because I knew it would be a late night and I didn’t have to get the boys ready for school early the next day cause they were off for the holiday. The show was so great (they didn’t change a thing from the original version which I must have seen with my grandpa at least 6 times. And you know my theory on change….change is bad. we fear change.) and just like I remembered, except it seemed smaller. Smaller theatre, smaller stage, just smaller. I guess thats a part of the whole growing up/changing perspective thingy. Then mom and I went over to Ruby Foo’s (asian fusion) for dinner at 10:30pm. We had such a great mother/daughter date. And lots of hand sanitizer. You know, for the train/subway. We are going to try to do that more often.

Timmy had his first day of his gym class on Friday. Timmy is in that class with his buddy Jack and they spent the whole time running around after eachother. Its so funny that every time it’s circle time (either at school or another class) and there is singing or participating, he just WILL. NOT. DO. IT. He will just sit there and not sing, clap, jump, or anything else they are asking him to do. But for other non-circle-activities, he’s all in. Loves the art project, or the races, or the story time an fully participates in that part. But a big no to the singing or following singing directions. Just weird.

The big boys had another soccer game today (game 2) and their team won 5-4. Jack was goalie in the 1st half (let up 4 goals, but did have at least 8 good saves). Patrick was definitely not on his game today. He didn’t play hard (maybe he used up all his hustle last week?) or run a lot. I have to reconsider that later bedtime I guess. Horsesoccer2_099rc
